About Soap Operas

Thom BierdzLast week, I told you that Thom Bierdz (Phillip Chancellor III on The Young and the Restless) agreed to an unusual request - an interview comprised entirely of readers' questions, with nothing off limits.

You submitted about two dozen questions for the only openly gay actor playing a gay character on a soap opera, and we broke the interview into three parts: Thom's career on Y&R, his personal life and his other interests.

If you aren't already a fan of this sweet, smart, funny and drop-dead sexy actor, this interview will make you a believer. If you're already a fan, I promise you'll learn things you didn't already know. This guy is the real deal.

Check out part one of the interview, focusing on Y&R. Thom talks about how long Phillip will be around, whether his son Chance might also be gay, his relationship with Jeanne Cooper, and what it's like to come back to a job after 20 years.

Next week, I'll post part two (focusing on his personal life). Find out if Thom is single, what his idea of a perfect date is, which celebrities he has a crush on, and other intimate details. I can't resist giving you just a taste of what's in store in part two: Helen asked whether Thom wears boxers or briefs ... or something else, or nothing at all. Helen, I can report to you that Thom proudly wears no underwear at all. Check back next week for more!

About Soap Operas

Oscar-nominated actress Julianne Moore will appear on As the World Turns  in a brief cameo, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Moore got her start on ATWT in 1985, playing the Hughes half-sisters. In a walk on, which EW.com reports could be taped as early as this Wednesday, Moore will greet Bob and Kim Hughes and wish them well. Longtime viewers will remember that Moore won an Emmy in 1988 for playing Frannie and Sabrina Hughes.

Will this be the first of many big send-offs before ATWT goes off the air in September? I think it might be a sign that CBS realizes that it shouldn't have sent Guiding Light out with a whimper, and should instead celebrate long-running soaps before putting them out to pasture. (Speaking of Guiding Light, I'll be at Mohegan Sun this Sunday to cover the final "So Long Springfield" event. Let me know if you're planning to attend, and we can arrange a Soap Opera Allie Meet-Up!)

About Soap Operas

My feature about the hottest gay characters on soaps sparked such an overwhelming response that I reached out to daytime's ultimate gay hunk, Thom Bierdz. He is the Big Gay Kahuna. The King of Gaytime. He here, he's queer, he's on daytime. In all seriousness, Thom Bierdz is a true pioneer.

Thom is the only gay man on daytime TV who is also playing an openly gay man. He portrays Phillip Chancellor III on The Young and the Restless. He first played the role from 1986 to 1989. I remember him as young, sweet and unbelievably sexy. Thom left the show and returned in 2009. By the time he came back to Y&R, Thom was an out gay man in life - and worked with the show's producers so that the character would also be out and proud (and, of course, drop-dead sexy).

In a few days, I'll be sitting down with Thom to talk about his life and career. All of the questions I ask him will be from you. Use the comments to share your questions for Thom. Nothing - and I mean nothing - is off-limits. Both of us are thrilled to be doing an interview based entirely on readers' questions ... so ask away!

About Soap Operas

I met Ellen Dolan, who has played Margo Hughes on As the World Turns since 1989, when she was performing in Cold Snaps, a play in New York last December. She is a gifted actress and a thoroughly delightful woman.

We've stayed in touch since then, and she happily agreed to a short interview about her career, her personal life and her plans after ATWT. I felt like I was sitting down with a girlfriend who is too busy to stay in touch regularly.

Ellen's frustrations with ATWT are clear. When I asked how she hopes Margo fares when ATWT goes off the air in September, she told me, "I don't hope anymore." She also says she has more time for other projects now because Margo isn't seen as having any "story value," and she talks about what she used to like about her character - qualities she says are long gone from Margo.

We also talked about happier subjects. Read the interview to find out Ellen's favorite moment as Margo, how Ellen unwinds after a long day and how she got her break in show business.

About Soap Operas

The King of Daytime is abdicating his throne. ABC just announced that David Canary, who has played Adam Chandler on All My Children for 27 years, will leave the show at the end of April.

Canary lives in Connecticut, and ABC says the commute to the show's new home in Los Angeles proved too taxing. My sources say ABC was unwilling to increase Canary's salary and, at the age of 71, he was ready to retire if the network didn't make continuing on the show more lucrative. Canary (who also played Adam's twin brother, Stuart) has won five Emmys for his work on AMC.

Over the next couple of months, Adam Chandler's marriage to Annie will get worse and worse - and, according to ABC, he will reunite with an ex-wife. Meanwhile, some people inside AMC are wondering if Susan Lucci will be the next casualty of the move to L.A....

UPDATE: Canary Says Adam Will 'Be Back'

In a statement issued to multiple media outlets, David Canary says he has " cherished each and every moment" on AMC, and he says that JR will become "head of the Chandler household." Most significantly, Canary also says:  "This is not the last you've seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan."

Millions of people are snowed in (or are about to be) in the Midwest or on the East Coast. If you're snowbound and channel-surfing, you might not have watched soaps in years - if ever. Below are some links with quick background on each major soap to get you up to speed.  By the time the storm passes, you might be hooked!

One Life to Live: The Buchanan, Lord and Cramer families come together - and tear apart - over matters of love and money. About.com Guide Katherine Thurston's "OLTL 101" gives you all the background.

General Hospital: Family drama abounds, but the hospital has always been the center of this soap. About.com Guide Maria Ciaccia has thorough history and character profiles.

Days of Our Lives: The Horton and Brady families go through great joy and tremendous despair in the town of Salem. About.com Guide Gwen Morett's "Days 101" is your one-stop resource to get up to speed on this soap.

The Bold and the Beautiful: This show is all about the Forresters, a fashion dynasty. Check out this overview for a full lay of the land.

As the World Turns: Five families, some rich and some not-so-rich, have been mixing it up for decades. This history of the show will fill in much of the background.

The Young and the Restless: The Abbot and Newman families are the center of this longtime favorite, and a cosmetics company called Jabot often hangs in the balance. Here's a helpful overview.
