About Animated TV

Don MartinMAD Magazine has a long history of subversive humor. I'm sure I'm not the only kid who slipped under the covers with a flashlight and the most recent issue. Now our favorite cartoons from Don Martin and Al Jaffe are getting animated for Cartoon Network. MAD premieres Monday, September 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET. In an interview with producers Mark Marek and Kevin Shinick I learned more about bringing the essence of MAD to TV audiences.

About Animated TV

The Mutants are RevoltingLeela leads an army of underground mutants in a revolt against the surface people in the milestone 100th episode of Futurama, premiering tonight at 10:00 p.m. on Comedy Central. In the season finale titled "The Mutants are Revolting," the Planet Express Crew has been hired to make their 100th delivery and Bender begins planning the party of the millennium. Meanwhile, however, the rest of the crew attends a fundraiser where Fry accidentally outs Leela as a mutant who is illegally living above ground. For that, she is banished to the sewers where her fellow mutants reside in futuristic squalor. Feeling guilty about his slip-up, Fry and the rest of the gang - along with the mutated members of Devo - join Leela in an epic mutant revolution against the surface dwellers.

About Animated TV

Regular ShowAsk me how much I love my 8 year-old son busting moves while rapping, "Don't look at our crotches while we synchronize our watches!" I bet you can guess how much. However, from what I've seen of Regular Show, there's nothing salacious or malicious about the characters or stories. The show is pure silliness. So silly and irrelevant, in fact, that I wonder how creator J.G. Quintel even thought of it. He is certainly able to channel his inner boy because he speaks volumes to the one I live with. Perhaps it's because he was so young when he created Regular Show; like all inspired cartoons (South Park, Family Guy) Quintel originally produced Regular Show as a short while attending the California Institute of the Arts. Those are two cartoons I really dig (well, Family Guy in the beginning). I'm hoping I will laugh as much at, um, regular episodes of Regular Show as I do at the commercials. Because the inner child in me loves chanting to my kids at breakfast, "Milk. Cereal. Combine!"

Lrrreconcilable NdndifferencesHypnotoad commands you to watch Futurama tonight at 10:00 p.m. on Comedy Central. Matt Groening, Katee Sackhoff, Sergio Aragones and David X. Cohen make guest appearances tonight at what seems to be a spoof of the San Diego Comic-Con.

I became an avid David X. Cohen fan after interviewing him for the release of the first Futurama movie, Bender's Big Score. He's incredibly smart, which means his humor is terribly witty. That's a big turn-on for me. I gotta say, if he had been in the room with me, rather than on the telephone, I would have been in his lap. Then he would have called security. Then... well, you know how that scene ends.

Prep & LandingMerry Christmas! The clever elves from Disney's Prep & Landing brought home a trophy from the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend for Outstanding Animated Program. For once, the Academy and I were in agreement; I totally called it way back when the nominations were announced.

Outstanding Short Form Animated Program went to Adult Swim's Robot Chicken. You can watch the Creative Arts Emmy Awards (a.k.a. the Schmemmys) on Friday, August 27, at 1:00 p.m. ET on E!.

About Animated TV

Bob's BurgersA new animated comedy will vie for ratings on Fox starting in January 2011. Bob's Burgers comes from creator Loren Bouchard (Home Movies, Lucy, Daughter of the Devil) about a man, his family and their floundering burger joint. Despite the greasy counters, lousy location and occasionally spotty service, Bob and his lovable and quirky family are convinced their burgers are their ticket to success. I'm especially looking forward to the performance of H. Jon Benjamin, who kills on Archer, and Kristen Schaal, whose career has skyrocketed since she became a stalker on Flight of the Conchords. Both have distinct voices and know how to bring the comedy. Watch interviews with the cast during Comic-Con 2010 at the Fox website.

About Animated TV

Star Wars: The Clone WarsCartoon Network announced it will premiere 22 all-new episodes for season 3 of the CG-animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The special, 1 hour season 3 premiere event of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs Friday, September 17, at 9:00 p.m. ET. Cartoon Network promises that secrets will be revealed, which I can only hope means more about Anakin's destiny.

Some old school Star Wars fans have told me they don't enjoy this cartoon. They complain that it doesn't capture the old magic. Well, I think differently. I think The Clone Wars does a bang-up job of combining Episode IV feeling with modern film-making conventions. The characters are quick, smart and funny. The action is plentiful. And the phenomenon of being a clone really adds to some of the storylines. Plus, in a cartoon that airs weekly, the Lucas team has time to flesh out characters that we didn't get to know terribly well in the feature films, like my current crush General Plo Koon. In a month, I'll be on the couch waiting to see how the finale pans out. (No spoilers!) Or at least, my TiVo will be.
