About Latin Music

Last year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) announced a reduction of the categories included in the Grammy Awards. Since that moment, different Latin artists have rallied against that decision. Now that the Grammy Awards are almost here, a group of musicians have come together to organize a new protest that will take place on February 12, the same day the Grammy Awards are set for.

Some of the most prominent faces of this protest are Latin music artists. In particular, there are several Latin Jazz figures involved in the upcoming protest. Artists like Ray Carrion, Oscar Hernandez, John Santos and Bobby Rodriguez will join this rally to express their disapproval regarding the elimination of the Latin Jazz category from the Grammy Awards. They will also support other genres affected by NARAS's decision such as contemporary Blues and Native American music.

The protest has been organized by Grammy Watch and presente.org, an organization supporting Latino rights in the US. This event will take place outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

Last Wednesday, Latin music superstar Juanes recorded his very first MTV Unplugged album. Since the moment the Latin Pop/Rock artist announced his unplugged project, we knew this was going to be one of the most anticipated albums of 2012. Now, that he is done with the recording of the album, the performance the Colombian star delivered last Wednesday has already consolidated the idea that his MTV Unplugged project is, indeed, one of the best Latin music CDs to hit the market this year.

The MTV Unplugged album is a trip to the musical career of one of today's most influential Latin music artists. However, this production is not entirely a review of the most famous songs by juanes. In fact, there are several surprises included on this work. Besides classic tracks like "A Dios Le Pido" and "La Camisa Negra," Juanes unveiled three new songs: "Todo En Mi Vida Eres Tu," "Azul" and "La Señal".

In addition to this surprise, the MTV Unplugged album features outstanding artists on stage. Apart from the iconic Juan Luis Guerra, who acted as the Musical Director of this production, the album features other artists including Brazilian sensation Paula Fernandes and the legendary Spanish singer and songwriter Joaquin Sabina.

The following are the songs included on this album:

  • "Fijate Bien"
  • "La Paga"
  • "Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor"
  • "Es Por Ti"
  • "Todo En Mi Vida Eres Tu"
  • "A Dios Le Pido"
  • "Hoy Me Voy" (featuring Paula Fernades)
  • "Volverte A Ver"
  • "La Camisa Negra"
  • "Azul" (featuring Joaquin Sabina)
  • "Para Tu Amor"
  • "La Señal"
  • "Me Enamora"
  • "Odio Por Amor"

Juanes recorded his MTV Unplugged album at the New World Center in Miami Beach. The album will premier on Tr3s: MTV, Música y Más, in addition to MTV Latin America, MTV Spain and VH1 Brasil in May 2012. Stay tuned for most updates regarding this exciting production.

About Latin Music

The legendary Cuban singer and songwriter Sara Gonzalez passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 in the city of Havana, Cuba. A leading figure of the Nueva Trova movement, Sara Gonzalez was widely recognized as the most influential female singer of this musical genre. She was a talented musician who shared the stage with artists like Joan Manuel Serrat, Mercedes Sosa and Chico Buarque.

At a young age, when she was studying music, Sara Gonzalez had the opportunity to meet Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes, the founders of the Nueva Trova movement. Very soon, she was captured by the innovative style of the movement, which was based on traditional folk music and defined by reflective lyrics charged with a strong political message.

Sara Gonzalez was an inspiring figure and one of Cuba's most beloved artists. Today, Latin music remembers the legacy of Sara Gonzalez and the world that she helped build around the Nueva Trova movement. Rest in peace.

About Latin Music

For the past days, I have been sharing with you different articles and blog posts dealing with Latin Jazz. While I was working on my Latin Jazz playlist article, and trying to come up with a selection of ten outstanding tracks in the history of Latin Jazz, I reluctantly left out of the list the single "Morning", a wonderful song written by American musician Clare Fischer.

After knowing Clare Fischer passed away, I felt I needed to pay tribute to the memory of this talented musician by sharing with you the "Morning" version that made me fall in love with Latin Jazz. This version by Cuban musician Alfredo Valdes Jr. is just plain fantastic, and includes a wonderful saxophone playing by Paquito D'Rivera.

"Morning" is, in fact, one of the most outstanding results of the interest Clare Fischer developed towards Latin music in the 1970s when he formed his own band Salsa Picante, and got two Grammy awards for the music he made with that group.

Clare Fischer died at 83. He produced more than 50 albums throughout his career, and worked alongside different stars like Dizzy Gillespie, Natalie Cole, Joao Gilberto and Michael Jackson. Latin Jazz will always remember Clare Fischer's memorable "Morning". R.I.P.
