About Heavy Metal

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal's past.  Manilla Road got their start in the late '70s, and released their debut album in 1980.  They split up in the early '90s, then reformed in 2000 and have been together ever since, and released a new CD in 2011.  Manilla Road's second full-length, 1982's Metal, is this week's Retro Recommendation.

About Heavy Metal

They've been making music for decades, having released albums in the '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s. Scorpions are nearing the end of their career, and have embarked on a lengthy farewell tour. They have released their final studio CD of new material, but the band does have two new projects. One is the CD Comeblack, consisting of re-recorded hits and cover songs. There's also a Blu-Ray DVD Live In 3D: Get Your Sting & Blackout. I spoke with guitarist Rudolf Schenker about the new CD and DVD, the timetable of their farewell tour, some of his best memories of the band's career and what his future plans are.

About Heavy Metal

The latest effort from the blackened death metal band Goatwhore is Blood For The Master. The band stays true to their core sound, but branches out and tries a few new things, making for more diversity. The dual vocals of Ben Falgoust and Sammy Duet are as potent and effective as ever. As their songwriting matures and their playing gets tighter, Goatwhore continues to sound better and better.

About Heavy Metal

His day job and passion is as a high school physics teacher, but Dave Schalek's obsession is extreme and underground heavy metal.  Every Monday he holds class in the depths of his underground laboratory, bringing you brief reviews of the latest black, death, grind and other extreme releases.  And since he is a teacher, each CD earns a grade.  Under the microscope in the week's lab are Vendetta, Wildernessking, Nominon, Uzala, Coldworker and Skewered.

The underground lab is always looking for new subjects to dissect, so extreme metal labels, bands and fans, if you know of a band we should include, send me an email!

About Heavy Metal

5 Questions With... is your chance to get to know a new or up-and-coming metal band. Nephelium are a death metal group from Canada, with some members originally from the United Arab Emirates. Their latest CD is Coils Of Entropy. Bassist Flo Ravet introduces us to his band.

Give us a brief history of Nephelium.
The band started in Dubai (UAE) in the late 1990s. We started gaining local renown, and put out a demo Archaic Malevolent Sorcery in 2002, and an EP Ignite the Wrath of Silence in 2003. Founding members Alan and Alex moved from Dubai to Toronto, Canada and found local musicians to make a name for Nephelium and ultimately record the album Coils of Entropy. Further lineup changes directly following the album's recording put the release of the album on hold until the right, definite members could be found.

Now in 2012, after a long and tumultuous journey spanning over 10 years and across 2 continents and countless lineup changes, Nephelium has finally become the unstoppable metal juggernaut it was always destined to be.

How would you describe the style/sound of Coils Of Entropy?
It's old school death metal, brutal and in your face, with just the right amount of technicality. We are particularly proud of the production on this album, as we were looking for a certain "feel" that we achieved.

What has been your most memorable Nephelium live show, and what are your upcoming live show plans?

Sharing the stage with Skinless was an absolute honor and more importantly, an all around good time! We definitely had a rush of adrenaline and pure energy as it was our first ever Canadian show. Unquestionably a show we will never forget.  We are planning to perform live extensively and are currently in the (very) early stages of working out some touring details.

How is the death metal scene in Toronto?
It's really interesting. Everyone in the metal scene knows one another. Even though Toronto it is such a big city, the metal community is so tight that we are all like one big family. Whether it be bands, fans or promoters, we all know what's going on. And of course the friendly competition between bands that keep things interesting.

Anything else you'd like to mention or promote?
I'd like to thank you personally for putting up this interview. We can't begin to express how important all what you're doing is and how grateful we are. And we are currently giving a free full song download of our song "Merciless Annihilation" on our Reverbnation page and you can also check it out on YouTube.

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal's past.   Bulldozer is an Italian band who got their start in the early '80s.  Their low-fi, black/speed metal sound drew numerous comparisons to Venom.  Bulldozer's 1985 debut The Day Of Wrath is this week's Retro Recommendation.

About Heavy Metal

2012 is off to a rousing start. Unlike movie studios that release the dregs at the beginning of the year, there were plenty of quality metal albums released in January. Huge names like Lamb Of God and Nightwish kick off 2012 with new releases, both of which made this month's top 5. But the top CD on the list is from a French black metal band that has sold probably 1/1000th the number of albums that LOG and Nightwish have. Check out our choices for the best metal CDs released in January, and post your favorites for the month.
