Hot on the heels of the casting of Jeremy Renner comes word that Paula Patton (Precious, Deja Vu) has beat out Kristen Kreuk and Lauren German for a starring role in Mission Impossible 4 (not the final title). Brad Bird (Ratatouille) is directing with Mission Impossible 3 director JJ Abrams producing. Tom Cruise will be back as Ethan Hunt, although he won't be collecting the massive paycheck he picked up for his work on the previous MI films.Deadline reports Patton will play an operative who works with Cruise. No real details on the plot have been disclosed, however Deadline does say MI4 will actually be a reboot of the franchise. Rumor has it Renner's being groomed to possibly take over as the lead in any future MI films.
Patton is currently filming Jumping the Broom with Laz Alonso (Avatar) and Julie Bowen (Modern Family).

Danny Trejo cuts off hands, heads, eviscerates people, and uses one specific organ as a means of escaping from a hairy situation in Machete, Robert Rodriguez' ode to '70s B-movies. Trejo's never had a role like this in his nearly 30 year film career, and the craggy-faced veteran actor makes the most of it. With his icy glare and don't mess with me attitude, Trejo out-toughs the entire cast of The Expendables - and he gets the girl. Read On...Also of Interest:

Darren Aronofsky was set to helm a remake/revamped version of the original Robocop back in 2008 and then things fell apart, with Aronofsky opting to tackle the psychological thriller Black Swan (currently screening at the Venice Film Festival to positive reviews) instead. When Aronofsky departed Robocop, rumors had it that his decision stemmed from MGM's desire to make it in 3D and his refusal to take it that direction. But in a recent interview with MTV, Aronofsky said that's not what prompted his departure. Instead, it was because of the studio's precarious financial position. In fact, Aronofsky revealed to MTV that he could still be interested in directing the remake. "We'll see what happens with it down the line," said Aronofsky. As for those reports he left due to a disagreement over making it in 3D, Aronofsky said it all stemmed from his answer to a question about 3D - an answer he gave before seeing James Cameron's Avatar. "With the right project, I'm totally into 3-D," said Aronofsky when asked how he now feels about the format. "Scorsese's working in 3-D [on Hugo Cabret]. I am very curious what that's going to be. Like everyone, I thought Avatar was an incredible experience. I'm also interested in what someone like John Waters would do in 3-D. That's when it starts to become interesting, when you start to see it used in very interesting, different ways."

Well, take it with a grain of salt but Pajiba is reporting Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are loosely (their word) attached to star in Breathers: A Zombie's Lament. Breathers will be produced by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body) and is based on the novel by S.G. Browne. At the LA premiere of Going the Distance, screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe said the script is ready to go. "We've got the script in and Searchlight seems to like it," said LaTulippe in our exclusive interview. "We'll see if we can put it together. That would be really great."
Asked how faithful his adaptation stays to the book, LaTulippe told me, "I tried to stay really close to the book. You know, there's some things that obviously you have to change. But I tried to stay really close to the book because I loved it so much. Scott Brown's a great writer."
Breathers is the story of Andy Warner, a guy who turns into a zombie after a car crash and is forced to live in his parents' basement and attend a support group for the undead. If the rumor is true, Gordon-Levitt would play Andy with Johansson likely taking on the role of Rita, a suicide victim-turned-zombie Andy meets and makes friends with at the Undead Anonymous meetings.
There's no word yet on potential directors or when Breathers might head into production.

Poor Christina Applegate looked beautiful but miserable walking the red carpet at the LA premiere of Going the Distance held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Pregnancy didn't keep Applegate from wearing high heels to the event, though by the time she'd done five or six interviews she looked ready to kick them off and go barefoot. "I have to wear sh--ty, uncomfortable shoes," joked Applegate before talking about playing Drew Barrymore's protective big sister in the R-rated romantic comedy. Also hitting the red carpet were director Nanette Burstein, who breaks away from documentary films with this project, screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe (who also talked about his next film, Breathers: A Zombie's Lament), and soundtrack artists The Boxer Rebellion. Check out what they all had to say about working on Going the Distance in these exclusive interviews from the red carpet:

Next is a comedy about bitter high school enemies (Kristen Bell and Odette Yustman) who meet up again years later when one is set to marry the other's brother in You Again (also starring Betty White, Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis). Robert Rodriguez and 20th Century Fox brought clips and Machete cast members Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo to Comic Con to build up buzz on the film. Fox threw a party - complete with tacos served by Rodriguez, Trejo, and writer/director Robert Rodriguez - on a street corner blocks from the actual Comic Con as the footage they wanted to show was deemed too violent to screen at the event. Those who made the trek a few blocks for food and drinks came out of the event raving about the Machete footage - and Fox's campaign to build up interest definitely worked.Taking a break from serving tacos, writer/director Rodriguez talked to me about making what was just a trailer in Grindhouse into a full-length feature film starring Danny Trejo in the title role:

This week's new releases kick off with George Clooney carrying the load in The American, a quiet thriller in which he plays a man who knows a thing or two about guns. Off and on-again off-screen couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long have a long distance relationship in Going the Distance, and Danny Trejo stars in a feature film based on a fake trailer from Robert Rodriguez' and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse.More on The American (Opened on Sept 1):

Well, what do you know? The latest Twilight film, Eclipse, did not wind up with the most nominations once the votes were tallied for the SCREAM 2010 Awards. Instead it was the under-rated Kick-Ass with 17 nominations in 13 categories and Christopher Nolan's trippy drama Inception with 15 nominations in 14 categories (including nods in the Best Ensemble and Fight Scene of the Year categories) that pulled in the most nominations. And Iron Man 2 wasn't far behind, entering the final voting process with 13 nominations. But the vampires weren't completely shut out. Eclipse did earn six nominations including acting nods for Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Xavier Samuel. And HBO's popular vampire series True Blood picked up the most of any TV show with 10 nominations. My favorite shapeshifter, Sam Trammell ('Sam Merlotte') - a nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category - had this to say about that show's nomination tally: "I'm thrilled to be included in this exceptional group of actors and so excited that True Blood has been recognized by the Scream Awards." There are going to be two distinct and unbudgeable camps when it comes to The American. In one camp you'll have the people who believe the thriller, with its minimal dialogue, limited character development, and too convenient plot, is bold and beautiful. In the other camp will be moviegoers like myself. We will see The American as a wasted opportunity, a flat, uninspired production that doesn't go anywhere and doesn't tell an engaging or even logical story. The American holds its audience at arm's length, a thriller with no thrills and no emotional connection that wraps up far too neatly to justify its opening and middle acts.
